Professor Karen Pine and Professor Ben Fletcher.
I know, I know, biggest cliché ever BUT i hate the cover of this book which put me off straight away………and what is not helping is so many of these stop smoking books say how easy it is to stop!! and this is one of them. Load of old todgers!! IF IT WAS EASY WOULD SO MANY PEOPLE STILL SMOKE??? Hello, be bloody real!!
Not a good start. What worries me about this book and other stop smoking books is the people have written something similar prior for weight loss………..Mmmmm, just don’t think you can apply the same principles. Food addiction maybe but then like any addiction there are components that are specific to that addiction and can’t be applied over the board.
“Giving up smoking doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Forget willpower and withdrawal—the six-week LOVE NOT SMOKING program will help you quit for good and also give you the tools for reclaiming your passion for life.
Love Not Smoking uses scientifically proven psychological techniques to train your brain to anticipate different rewards; swap old habits for new, revitalizing ones; and learn new ways to relieve stress and get more pleasure out of your days.
And if you’re trying to help friends and loved ones quit the habit, you’ve probably already realized that nagging doesn’t work—they need your love, support, and understanding. So give them this book to show that you care enough to want them to quit! (Quote from book).
The LNS (love not smoking) works by breaking down the web of habits that support and maintain smoking. I like that they treat smoking as a mental and physical addiction and emphasise the need to break both dependencies. The authors both smoked early in their life for a short period. They look at why some methods work and others don’t, cold turkey, Allen Carr, NRT, talk therapies, acupuncture and so on….
This is a 6 week program and 3 weeks of that are preparing yourself before you quit and each day you have a task to do.The program itself is nothing new, it’s just the authors version of many other books. It also looks at your relationships with other people and looking at how they can be strengthened. Its nice but really if I was giving up smoking, my main concern would be stopping the fags, not my relationship.
The thing is when you stop smoking, that is what your life is about for a while, because you really don’t have the energy initially to concentrate on other areas of your life. For a short period, you need to be selfish and concentrate on you and NOT SMOKING, not worry so much about your relationships with others.
Would I use this book to stop smoking? Nope, because it is no different really than many of the other books out there, it’s just reworded & jazzed up a bit from the last stop smoking book you may have read. Would it get you thinking about stopping? Maybe but if you had read a few other stop smoking books, no.
There is nothing in here to make it different from most stop smoking books. If you are expecting something mind-blowing or different, sorry but it is run of the mill.
If you need to get it, then get it from the library.
