The Eternal Fight…a long long long long road….

You know, It really feels like that at times. Lets kick September off by pondering this…….

You know that I am not trying to discourage you at all, but more being honest.

Almost 5 years for me and still at times I want to smoke and in that split second, that craving is so intense. It goes but does it come to remind me I am not infallible? Continue reading

Grrrrr Rant ALERT!!

HA HA, you will think ” god hope she doesn’t go AWOL again as this is what we get when she returns” ….

Maybe too much time to think………

Now in my mind, smokers should use ALL methods/help/support etc available to stop. They should not be castigated for using certain methods. As I have said prior, I don’t LIKE NRT because I don’t believe it helps you stop in the long run and I think it is just too tied up with the Government,, government funding, cigarette tax and their policies. It is very murkey waters..BUT should you stop using NRT , who am I to go on at you?

Now what has really pissed me off in today’s rant, is the NZ Quitline.

They are on my front page……………..

I have the utmost respect and will promote this site as I found this to be a great blogging tool and stop smoking tool when I stopped smoking. The other day, I posted an entry on there as I do often about funny or quirky stuff or just to support smokers quitting. My post was declined because the powers that be had decided that I had mentioned the WHY QUIT website too much!!

Quitline is supposed to be FOR SMOKERS!! Why not post it and let smokers decide as it is for them!! There is no financial gain for me or anyone who is sending people to that WHY QUIT site. I support it because it helped me and I truly believe in it. It is hard-core BUT it works!! Quitline should support all methods to quit that are sensible. Granted if I said, I starved for a week and then ate cat poo and that helped me, sure, i would be skeptical and remove a potentially dangerous post too…….

But I am suggesting ways to help people smoking and they say that is self promotion!! I don’t own WHY QUIT…………..and neither does the creator of it…………MADNESS

Go figure.

No wonder people bloody smoke:) But not us….

Easy Way for Women to Stop Smoking:

Allen Carr and Bev Aisbett.

A liberating guide to a smoke free future. Allen Carr’s illustrated version!!

Allen, in this book, acknowledges difficulties that are particular to women who want to stop smoking. It is written in Allen’s usual manner and the illustrations by Bev are great. As you know, i think the ‘easy’ is a farce but Allen does make it easier to stop.

This particular version wasn’t out when i stopped but it is quite good. Not sure if i prefer it over the original version but the pictures make it lighter hearted and they do appeal in a sense. It has the same message as all his books.

Just don’t know whether I would use it to stop though? Hmm, will need to ponder it more.

Maybe more first steps or a contemplation period book?

I like that Allen says that you can never have another puff.

World Smoking News 18/06/2012

Evening!! First day at a new job today- LOTS of smokers:(

Rio Ferninand accused of endorsing cigarette firm that promotes children smoking:

Welsh Hospital patrolling grounds in order to enforce smoking ban:

Smokers shifting to e-cigarette:

GRRR ..Closet & Part Time Smokers…

Sorry but I have to say that part-time, closet or/and occasional smokers REALLY piss me off!!

I used to think it was because they had the control to smoke a few and then not bother about it for ages. That used to send me into a JEALOUS INCANDESCENT RAGE!! How dare they have 1-2 smokes and then hide it away again until they felt like another?? Or just pretend they didn’t smoke? More importantly, why could I not do this?

It was my dream to smoke 1-2 a day, I would have been happy to do this. I would not have considered myself to be an addict on 1-2 a day………SUPREME CONTROL!!Thats what I thought smugly to myself. Hah ha ha How naive I was!! So I embarked on my part time supremeness to only have 1-2 smokes a day and this is basically how it would pan out. I woke up, make my coffee and enjoy that morning smoke, in peace, bliss, before the day would start………………then I would have a smoke to look forward to at the end of the day!! Easy………….Yep, all sounds good BUT in reality, ALL DAY, ALL DAY AND ALL DAY, I would wait for it to be the appointed hour where I could have my 2nd smoke………… a bloody fool!!After the PM smoke, I would be waiting for the morning, the only good thing was 6-8 hours sleep would ease that waiting. Not quite a part-time smoker……….

I would rage at these bloody people who would have a packet of smokes and it would last them…..say a month!! And they would smugly just have one, sliding the smoke out of the packet with oh so casual non chalantness that makes you want to slap them, HARD!! Like they don’t really want the smoke but are doing it only cause they feel like it and its no big deal. You would want to kill them and I am sure they said it with extreme smugness too!!

What about the casual/ closet smokers that nick all your fags and never replace them? And in the same breath as asking for a smoke, go on about dirty smokers?? GRRRRRRRRR

Some people may become part-time smokers on their way to give up, this is acceptable!!

What is not acceptable is the bum licky ones i have described above………

That makes me wonder then, am I a closet drinker??? Do people look at me and go bum lick, How can she only drink once a year maybe? No, surely not 🙂 I don’t drink because like the cigarettes, I can’t control myself so I just don’t or I will drink rarely but fully accepting when I do, I know I will not have just have one drink. Maybe I am a binger? I suppose smokers are bingers too………they will binge and then not smoke for months……..

Hmmm, may need to ponder this more………

Interestingly enough, this part-time and occasional smoking behaviour has been noticed and like Allen Carr (bow at the knee) said, “We (smokers) aspire to be like that and to have that control to smoke at leisure!!” but really who has the control?? Hmmm. If you had the control would you need to have that odd one smoke?

Stop Smoking: 52 Brilliant Ideas….

52 Brilliant ideas to kick the habit for good.

Peter Cross and Clive Hopwood.

Nice softcopy, not too serious looking, smallish book , quite thick but the writing is quite large and there are lots of photo’s and tips so it’s not just blah blah blah….One of them was a smoker but both have smokers in their families.

Written in a sort of matey way. (I think Allen Carr started this!!) I like matey books as they tend not to treat you like a Dumbo. Wahoo!!  Smoke while you read the book (this has to be good)  and the 52 ideas start. They know you don’t want to be bombarded with facts and figures as you know these facts but what they give you are 52 ideas to help you stop that work. What is good about this book that it doesn’t take the same method for all approach and that is why is its pretty good. It recognises that smokers (like everyone) ARE individual and what works for me, may not for you and so on.Somewhere in this book will be an idea that will help you in some way.It may not help you stop, but it may get you thinking in a more positive way about stopping smoking, that you COULD stop, rather than thinking, “nope, never going to happen!”.

This book is sort of like an updating your skills course. The book in itself will not make you stop in the sense most of us will not pick it up and then stop smoking at the end. What it will do as i stated above, is leave you with lots to think about and new ideas because even stop smoking methods evolve. What I like best is, I personally think most people need to incorporate 2 or more methods in making their stop smoking plan and this book is brilliant for that. It will provide ideas for the MOST negative of smokers:)

I particularly like the smokers profile in her as its very jokey but it is so true!! Who knows all the bum lick special occasion smokers that most smokers want to throttle as they don’t really smoke, just every now and then!! Their cravings never seem to bother them at other times!! I suspect this is not the case but I will do a smokers profile up myself and I am sure you will recognise yourself and others:) All in good humour of course.

I love that they tell you to stop when you are feeling shit (yes, they say that). I LOVE IT!!It is so true, as I always used to wait for the perfect day to stop when all had to be so so and all the planets in alignment….you all know what I mean! It was NEVER going to happen.

In addition, it looks at ways to help yourself stop, methods, support, the old bugbear WEIGHT GAIN, and they get you to do exercises that make you think about smoking in a new way and not in a stupid arse way either.

I like this book and recommend it to all looking for inspiration and a good over all general book for ways to stop. It is serious but in a jokey manner. Oops and it has lots of REAL FAQ!!

Read it!

NZ Govt likes smokers…..

Charming!!! But true……………Lets not be one of them……….

A Treasury report has admitted that smoking saves the Government money because smokers die earlier and pay more in tobacco tax than their health problems cost.

The regulatory impact statement on tobacco taxes prepared ahead of the Budget said smokers’ shorter life expectancies reduced the need for superannuation and aged care.

“When the broader fiscal impacts of smoking are considered … smokers are probably already ‘paying their way’ in narrowly fiscal terms.”

In last week’s Budget, Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia introduced tobacco levies that will increase the price of a 20-pack of cigarettes to more than $20 in four years.

The charges would increase the Government’s tax take from tobacco from $1.3 billion to around $1.7 billion by 2016.

The Treasury document acknowledged that the revenue gathered in tobacco taxes already exceeded the health costs of smoking.

A University of Otago study in 2007 estimated that the direct cost of smoking to the Ministry of Health was $300 million to $350 million.

The Treasury cited a Ministry of Health study that estimated the indirect health costs of smoking at $1.9 billion, but acknowledged the figure had been disputed and was far higher than previous estimates”.
